Equality

Public Sector Equality Duty

At Bedford Drive Primary School, we are committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion for all members of our school community, including children, staff, parents, carers and visitors.

We aim to promote equality through our resources, school policies, curriculum and everyday practice. We encourage our pupils to understand and respect differences and we actively challenge discrimination, prejudice, bullying and stereotypes.

We recognise the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010:

  • Age

  • Disability

  • Gender reassignment

  • Marriage and civil partnership

  • Pregnancy and maternity

  • Race

  • Religion or belief

  • Sex

  • Sexual orientation

We are committed to ensuring that everyone in our school community is treated fairly, with dignity and respect, and has equal access to opportunities.

Our Equality Objectives

Our equality objectives support the three aims of the Public Sector Equality Duty:

1. Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation

We will:

  • Promote understanding of equality and the Equality Act 2010 across our school community.

  • Challenge discrimination, prejudice, bullying and stereotypes.

  • Promote an environment where everyone is treated with respect.

  • Monitor incidents of discrimination and prejudice and take appropriate action.

2. Advance equality of opportunity

We will:

  • Maintain high standards of inclusive practice.

  • Ensure equality of access and opportunity for all pupils.

  • Continue to identify barriers to learning, participation and achievement.

  • Provide appropriate support to meet the diverse needs of our pupils.

  • Use relevant school data to identify where additional support may be required.

  • Monitor the achievement and progress of different groups of pupils and take action where inequalities or barriers are identified.

3. Foster good relations

We will:

  • Promote respect and understanding between people from different backgrounds.

  • Use our curriculum and wider school opportunities to develop pupils' understanding of equality, diversity and difference.

  • Challenge prejudice and promote positive relationships throughout our school community.

  • Encourage pupils to respect the rights, beliefs and differences of others.

How We Promote Equality

Equality is considered across all aspects of school life, including:

  • Teaching and learning

  • Curriculum development

  • Behaviour and relationships

  • Safeguarding

  • SEND and inclusion

  • Pupil wellbeing

  • Attendance and participation

  • Recruitment and employment

  • School policies and procedures

  • Access to activities and opportunities

We aim to provide every pupil with the opportunity to succeed and achieve their highest possible level of personal development and academic achievement.

We use appropriate information and data to help us identify barriers and differences in outcomes and to determine where further support or action may be required.

Monitoring and Review

The Governing Body and school leaders monitor equality as part of the school's wider improvement and safeguarding work.

Our Public Sector Equality Duty information is reviewed and updated annually. Our Equality Objectives are reviewed and published at least every four years, in accordance with the requirements for schools.

Current Equality Objectives:
2026–2030

Our objectives will be monitored to ensure that they continue to reflect the needs of our pupils and school community.
