F2 at Bedford Drive Primary School

A Warm Welcome

Here at Bedford Drive Primary School, we greatly value the important role that the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) plays in laying secure foundations for future learning and development. We believe that early childhood is valuable in itself and should be viewed not simply as preparation for the next stage of education, but as preparation for life. Through a nurturing, language-rich environment, we encourage children to become confident, curious and independent learners.

We place a strong emphasis on effective communication and language development through the use of the SHREC approach and our commitment to using the Voice21 Oracy strategy to underpin our curriculum. By developing children’s speaking, listening and vocabulary skills from the very beginning, we empower children to express themselves clearly, build positive relationships and become confident communicators for life.

Our EYFS Approach

We provide a secure, nurturing and language-rich environment where every child feels safe, valued and inspired to learn. Through our commitment to Voice 21 Oracy and the SHREC approach, we place a strong emphasis on developing communication and language skills, enabling children to become confident speakers, attentive listeners and effective communicators. Rich conversations, high-quality interactions and purposeful vocabulary development are embedded throughout our daily practice.

We believe children should experience a wide range of first-hand experiences and practical learning opportunities that spark curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning. Carefully planned enhancements and differentiated challenges engage children in meaningful learning experiences, encouraging enquiry, imagination and problem solving. Staff carefully consider each child’s interests and developmental needs to provide an inclusive, stimulating and enjoyable curriculum that supports every child to flourish.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed in line with the 2021 Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), taking into account each child’s individual needs, interests and stage of development, while supporting progress towards the Early Learning Goals set out by the DfE. We recognise that children learn best through meaningful play, active exploration and positive relationships, and we place the Characteristics of Effective Learning at the heart of our provision. We encourage children to play and explore, become active learners and think creatively and critically as they develop confidence, resilience and independence.

We have a clear and balanced approach to learning in the Early Years, combining the development of strong foundations in Reading, Writing and Mathematics with early years best practice. Our curriculum is carefully designed to provide opportunities for learning through play, enabling environments, outdoor exploration and high-quality adult-child interactions. As children progress through the year, the balance gradually shifts to prepare them for the next stage of their education, while remaining developmentally appropriate and responsive to individual needs.

Children are taught the essential skills and knowledge they need through engaging, meaningful experiences that build progressively on prior learning. Expectations increase at each stage to ensure all children make strong progress and develop confidence as learners. Communication and language development underpin all areas of learning, and through high-quality interactions, purposeful talk, Voice 21 Oracy strategies and the SHREC approach, we support children in becoming articulate, confident and effective communicators.

Parental Engagement

We value parents and carers as partners, recognising that they are a child’s first and most influential educators. By building strong relationships between home and school, we work collaboratively to support every child’s learning, wellbeing and development.

Parental partnership and engagement are at the heart of our EYFS provision, as we believe children learn best when they see that home and school are working together. We encourage parents and carers to play an active role in their child’s learning journey through a range of opportunities linked to our overarching themes and curriculum.

Throughout the year, we invite families to attend Stay and Play sessions, celebration events and shared learning opportunities, allowing parents to learn alongside their children and celebrate their achievements. We also provide workshops in Phonics, Reading and Mathematics to support parents in understanding how these key skills are taught within EYFS and how they can further support learning at home.

Our staff are available at the beginning and end of each school day to share information and discuss children’s progress and wellbeing. Parents also receive half-termly newsletters outlining the learning journeys, knowledge and skills that children will be developing each half term. In addition, parents are kept informed of their child’s progress through termly parent consultations and an end-of-year report.

All of our subject overviews begin from Nursery—please refer to the curriculum pages for further details.
